My Father's Last Love Letter (...valentine) 2012 – a note I have a letter to deliver. At least try my best to, anyway. It isn’t mine. My father wrote the words. Probably the last if not the last before that capacity, as others, left him. There's no address. I don’t know what's written - I haven’t opened the envelope, and won’t. Thursday Words: Cernobbio, Jimmy and 9-11

(2011) Jimmy, an old man, was a Japanese homeless artist living around a deli on 7th and Prince 11 years ago, though we had left the city a few months before. We'd gotten to know him - which was a bit difficult, trying to follow his discourse in a heavily accented, broken English. He might have been schizophrenic or more likely have had other problems (stroke), seeing as his mobility was somehow not qu ite right. Anyway, he never asked for money, in fact refused to accept charity of any kind. So we would 'commission' art and bring him supplies and then buy the resulting works, heavily influenced by his Onymodo, yin-yang philosophy. The balance of things. And there on the street he would elegantly move his hand and arm in the drawing of koi's in a pond or other, seeming happy at least in those moments. As an indulgent self-birthday gift last december (2013) I did a sort of experiment and asked whoever had nothing better to do like, say, clip their toenails, to read a short story and answer a question following. I thank again those who did. Beth's Island She awoke, opened her eyes and stared up at the ceiling in the dim light. She had been dreaming of views from high places, of many people far away scurrying about, of metallic, dusty odors first and then of a light drizzle falling over a line of trees that ran parallel to a quieter street. Then her perspective had changed and she was on a sidewalk walking past familiar faces and parked cars and brick buildings with small stores on the ground floor. She tried holding onto those images but they faded quickly and the young woman found herself alone and unable to remember where she was or how she had gotten there, as if her memories had been taken away with her dreams to a place she could not find.
