Valentine: My Father's Last Love Letter

My Father's Last Love Letter (...valentine) 2012 – a note I have a letter to deliver. At least try my best to, anyway. It isn’t mine. My father wrote the words. Probably the last if not the last before that capacity, as others, left him. There's no address. I don’t know what's written - I haven’t opened the envelope, and won’t. I’m not that way, and that’s not the point of it. But I now who it’s for. The words are for the two them. I merely have to carry something from one place, one time, to another. Connect them. You might consider it the other way around though, that the two places and times are the same, and all I have to do is ignore the space between. Depends on your point of view. What’s space, anyway? Or time, for that matter. There’s a woman’s name on top of the envelope. Not my mother’s. Tina. The true love of my father’s life. I suspect the feeling is mutual. ' Convergent developments across social scientific disciplines provide evidence that ritual is a psychologically prepared, culturally inherited, behavioral trademark of our species. We draw on evidence from the anthropological and evolutionary science literatures to provide a psychological account of the social functions of ritual for group behavior. Solving the adaptive problems associated with group living requires psychological mechanisms for identifying group members, ensuring their commitment to the group, facilitating cooperation with coalitions, and maintaining group cohesion. As an indulgent self-birthday gift last december (2013) I did a sort of experiment and asked whoever had nothing better to do like, say, clip their toenails, to read a short story and answer a question following. I thank again those who did. Beth's Island She awoke, opened her eyes and stared up at the ceiling in the dim light. She had been dreaming of views from high places, of many people far away scurrying about, of metallic, dusty odors first and then of a light drizzle falling over a line of trees that ran parallel to a quieter street. Then her perspective had changed and she was on a sidewalk walking past familiar faces and parked cars and brick buildings with small stores on the ground floor. She tried holding onto those images but they faded quickly and the young woman found herself alone and unable to remember where she was or how she had gotten there, as if her memories had been taken away with her dreams to a place she could not find.
